In the period 2018-2020, the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities – Skopje implemented the project “Tackling the Tide of Illiberal Democracy in Europe: Policy Research and Communications Plan of Collaborative Actions,” supported by the OSIFE. The focus was on the growing phenomenon of illiberal democracy, the crisis of liberal values and the rise of authoritarianism and populism. The aim was to contribute to the European scene of think tanks and policy research institutes with new knowledge, data and explanatory frameworks based on its research conducted on local level. The project included scoping trips and fellowships to institutes and universities in Germany, France, Austria and Belgium. The activities resulted in three international events with renowned experts like: Jacques Rupnik, Ruth Wodak, Ivan Krastev, Ivan Vejvoda, Venelin Ganev, Adam Ramsey, Luke Cooper, Niccolo Milanese, Peter Kreko etc. A joint publication about illiberal democracy has already been accepted by McGill-Queen’s University Press with contributors like Rupnik, Vejvoda, Krastev, Kolozova and others.
